  • Together 5 volumes, folio (325 x 205 mm), about 5000 pages in total, with an engraved additional title with the Hakluytus posthumus of Purchas his pilgrimes, seven folding maps, and 81 smaller maps in the text; engraved and woodcut illustrations; fore-margin shaved (as often); margins of the map of China in the Pilgrimage trimmed.
  • First edition of the four volumes of the Pilgrimes. This copy includes the engraved additional title, which is not always present. The Pilgrimage is the fourth and largest edition, with much new material, which was issues as a companion to, and in the same format as, the Pilgrimes.
  • Purchas had exclusive access to the records of the English East India Company and was therefore able to print for the first time the most important collectiona of first-hand material in English relating to Japan. The most important of these were the two letters from William Adams describing his voyage across the Pacific and his first months in Japan; Captain John Saris's account, which contains considerable information about the country, the people, political events and trade; and the extracts from the journal and letters of Richard Cocks, the English factor at Hirado 平戸 between 1615 and 1622, whose journal contains richly detailed first-hand description of the landscape, the Japanese people, local customs, feasts, receptions and political events. Indeed, aside from various Catholic missionary writings (Which are largely concerned with the persecution of Christians in Japan), Purchas's japanese material comprised the mosst important collection of first-hand documents concerning Japan to be printed anywhere in Europe in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, giving a unique picture of the country just before the advent of the sakoku 鎖国 era.
  • Also notable is the inclusion (in volume I) of a Japanese document, which is the first attempt to print an extensive Japanese text in England. It is, Purchas says, a 'Japonian charter' confirming the trading privileges granted by ' Ogoshosama 大御所様, Emperor of Japan', to the East India Company.
  • Besides the records of the English in Japan, Purchas includes selections from Jesuit writings, Dutch voyages to the East Indies and Marco Polo's travels, together with a mass of other material relating to the Far East and Asia in general.
